Helligvær |

Norsk
English Deutch |
| Helligvær
is a jewel situated 30 km to the west of Bodø in the Vestfjord.
Magnificent views frame the horizon in every direction
– to the south
Helgeland, southeasterly Salten and the Børvasstindan
mountain group, northeasterly Steigen and from north to west the
whole of the Lofoten Islands range,
from Svolvær to the mountains of Røst. |
 |
 |
Helligvær
is a typical fishing community with quays and boathouses along
the seashore with the houses placed in sheltered spots away from
the sea.
The
old Nordland houses ooze coastal history. Since
the 19th century the white building has in its time
served as post office, taproom and private house. |
The
island community of Helligvær is said to consist of 365 islands,
rocks and skerries, of which 5 are inhabited.
These are from the south: Sørvær, Brønnøy. Storsørøy,
Vetterøy and Vokkøy. The
islands of Beskøy and Prestøy are populated during the summer
months.
Helligvær
lies close to the good fishing grounds in theVestfjord and the
population earn their living in the main from fishing. (The
halibut in the picture weighed approximately 170 kilos). Rod
fishing from the rocks is a good alternative.

Helligvær
is a peaceful place. Sørvær
is the main island where you’ll find a shop, post office,
school and fish wholesaler. The
island has about 2km
of made up road and only one car. Approximately
90 people live on Sørvær.
Brønnøy has only one permanent resident but is visited
by many during the summer months.
Helligvær Church lies on Storsørøy which has a
population of 5 permanent inhabitants. The largest island, Vokkøy
has 6 people living on it, and here you will find the islands’
highest point, 50 meters above sea level.
There is a causeway connecting Vetterøy with its 2
inhabitants to Ladegårdsøy. |
| The
rich plant and animal life on Helligvær is immediately apparant.
There are numerous otters and their paths criss cross the
islands. Sea eagles,
black guillemots, cormorants, eider ducks and geese are common
visitors in the breeding season.
The rich sea life provide plenty to feed them and their
young. |
 |
 |
The
islands are a little rugged and perfect for exploring for both
young and old. There are
sandy beaches and rock pools for children to play in and also
opportunities for those wishing to explore the islands further
on foot. Camping
is permitted. |
